INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Orange and black food coloring gel
  • Halloween-themed cookie cutters (ghosts, pumpkins, bats, etc.)
  • White icing for decorating
  • Black decorating gel or icing for spooky details
  • Assorted Halloween sprinkles and candy eyes

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms. Split the dough in half.
  5. Tint one half of the dough with orange food coloring gel and the other half with black food coloring gel. Knead the dough until the color is evenly distributed.
  6. Wrap each colored dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  8. Roll out the orange and black dough separately to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use Halloween-themed cookie cutters to cut out spooky shapes.
  9. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  10. Cool the cookies on a wire rack before decorating.
  11. Use white icing to frost the cookies as a base. Allow it to set for a few minutes.
  12. With black decorating gel or icing, add spooky details such as faces, spiderwebs, and stitches to the cookies.
  13. Sprinkle assorted Halloween sprinkles and attach candy eyes while the icing is still wet to create eerie accents.
  14. Let the decorated cookies dry completely before serving. Enjoy your spooky Halloween sugar cookies!
